     800 x 500 x 2 bits = 800 Kb

   2.  An image is 800 by 500 pixels, and each pixel can be one of four colors. How much storage space would it require?

       800 x 500 x 2 bits = 800 Kb

   3. How many different colors could one represent using two, three and four bit codes?

   Two bits - 4 colors
   Three bits - 8 colors
   Four bits - 16 colors

No. A picture would use a different coding format than ISO 8859-1 such as jpeg or bmp.

ISO 8859-1 was designed as a text code.

2. Write the word Hello using the ISO 8859-1 character standard.

H – 01001000

e – 01100101

l --  01110010

l –  01110010

o -- 01101111

a. How many bits did it take?

40 bits

b. How many bytes did it take?

8 bytes

c. Would it take more bytes in memory than in storage?

No.

3. At 10 bits per second, how long would it take to transmit Hello from one computer to another?

4 seconds

4. Which contains more information 100 random bits or 1,000 random bits? Explain your answer.

Online Purchase Tax

Amazon shoppers will start to see a state tax charge on online purchases in the near future. Dr. Press's posted blog describes the burden the online tax will have on those that are already at a disadvantage financially. The post caught my eye because of its emphasis on the consumers' pocketbook, but there is the competitive advantage that online firms enjoy by not charging state tax on purchases. Businesses online and offline should be allowed to operate on a level playing; besides the extra taxes collected could relief some the state's financial woes. This article relates to the implications of online purchasing on consumers' budgets and marketplace competition.

Assignment 18

  1. What is the title of the post you chose?
The 2010 Sloan online teaching survey

   2. What is its permalink URL?

       http://cis471.blogspot.com/2010/11/2010-sloan-online-teaching-survey.html

   3. What tag(s) does it have?

       implications, sloan, teaching

   4.Why did you choose it?

I took an online class in the summer and found it difficult but the     instructor was very helpful, even though I have never met him or even seen him. I was also interested in how online classes might affect for-profit schools. They seem to think that Federal regulations on student loans for those institution may cut into their profits. Charging close to $90,000 for a BA, I don't blame those schools for getting a little skittish.
